Our Story
Wikwemikong Tourism offers an array of authentic Indigenous experiences that reflect the cultural lifestyles and traditions of the Anishnaabek people of the Three Fires Confederacy – Ojibwe, Odawa, and Pottawatomi. As Manitoulin Island's largest First Nation community and Canada's only officially recognized Unceded Indian Reserve, we welcome you to delve into our rich culture and history through our nature based and cultural tourism experiences. Our guides will take you on a journey through time as you learn of the legends of our people while exploring the vast lands and waters of Wiikwemkoong.

Bebamikwe 

Embark on an interpretive hike through the Bebamikawe Memorial Trail leading to stunning views along the Niagara Escarpment. Manitoulin is known as being one of the most plant diverse areas in North America and we have designed our hiking trail to flow through this diverse ecological habitat. While taking part on this tour, you will experience:

• First Class Trail system with scenic hiking routes, complete with educational signage;
• Replicas of lodges and hunting shelters depicting how our woodland ancestors used to live;
• How Anishnaabek people harvest plants for edibility and medicinal purposes;

Our knowledgeable guide will connect you with nature by showing you the uses and science behind the teachings. Walk away with a new way of thinking, understanding and appreciation of our culture; experience our territory through the lens of our ancestors.

unceded journey     Unceded Journey

Through our Unceded Journey Tour, experience the history of Odawa Mnis (Manitoulin Island), and Wiikwemkoong—Canada's only officially recognized Unceded Indian Reserve. Our guide will take you to four historic sites to view plaques and monuments that tell the history of Manitoulin Island. This educational experience will share the 1836 and 1862 treaties of Manitoulin Island, intrigue you with the local lore and legend of Zhibzhii the underwater spirit, and take you back in time to the now infamous "Manitoulin Incident".

canoe tour Bay of the Beaver

Paddle the canoe route of our ancestors and experience the history of the Wiikwemkoong fishing islands. This tour departs from Meeshkodewaang (Prairie Point), located on the northern shores of Wiikwemkoong, leading you to the fishing islands along beautiful Lake Huron. This tour will follow the shoreline of Prairie Point through the sheltered Wiikwemkoong fishing islands overlooking the Lachloche Mountain range. Your guide will captivate you with local legends and historical facts while you take in the picturesque scenery. Explore our historic islands and learn about the diverse plants that we harvest for usefulness, edibility, and medicinal purposes. This adventure will follow the canoe route of our ancestors to the 17th century Iroquois battle site at Skulls Point and end at Meeshkodewaang (Prairie Point).

Dewegan 

This intimate experience teaches you about Anishnaabek songs and drum teachings. It includes an exhilarating hand drum performance and an opportunity to participate! Beat the drum and learn the different styles of songs that can be heard throughout Turtle Island (North America).

 Seven Grandfathers

Seven GrandfathersImmerse yourself in a cultural activity guided by the Seven Grandfather Teachings. Listen to one of our oldest teachings and the lessons within as you create your very own piece of art. Expect to be surrounded by the beauty and sounds of nture in a sheltered outdoor environment.

This educational tour focuses on the Anishnaabek use of plants, their edibility and medicinal purposes. Our knowledgeable guides have absorbed the ways of our people, they will connect you with nature by showing you the traditional uses, and sciences behind the teachings. Our guides teach the real, proven and definite side of plant based medicine, not the mystical.

 Point Grondine Park

 


 

 Species

Species moosePoint Grondine Park, along with Wiikwemkoong's Department of Lands and Natural Resources, is pleased to provide you with a guided interpretive hike highlighting our species and species of concern that make Point Grondine their home. Get a chance to listen to one of the whippoorwills that reside along Recollet's Summit or one of the eastern wood-pewees that nest along the Mahzenazing access route. Learn about the larger species that inhabit Point Grondine, such as the moose, black bear, and the snapping turtle. Observe or listen for warblers or other bird species on your list. The presence of wild species is not guaranteed.

Camp out in an authentic Anishnaabek (Odawa) lodge and experience how people lived since time immemorial. The campsite includes a fire pit, split wood seating, clearing for a tent, and canoe with paddles including life-jackets. Experiential packages will be available upon request. Experiential packages include the Dewegan - Drum and Song experience and Making Footprints tour in Point Grondine Park.
